The Early Prints, 1950-53, show Hodaka interested
in people, nature, and intrinsic power. Sail is not about a ship or sailing, but about the power captured by the sail’s form.
Love and Hate shows the energy in emotion. The style is semiabstract, with simplicity of form and elegance in color. In the
images here and on other pages, certain colors, especially red and black, are often lighter than in the original prints. (See
pink, think red.)
